Doconomy's 2030 Calculator Democratizes Product Carbon Footprint Labeling

Swedish impact-tech startup Doconomy has launched a new, free tool that enables fast and reliable product carbon footprint calculations for brands and manufacturers.

The 2030 Calculator aims to enhance transparency around the impacts of products, and democratize fast and reliable product carbon footprint calculations.

To date, calculating the carbon footprint of products has been complex, costly and time-consuming — with regular Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations taking weeks to complete per product. This makes performing product carbon footprint calculations especially difficult for small- and medium-size brands.

Efforts to quantify the overall impacts of products have run the gamut — in addition to LCA, tools and methodologies have been developed for calculate products’ water, chemical and even social footprints — but most have been costly, complex and hard to standardize and scale. The 2030 Calculator, on the other hand, can generate a result in minutes, at no cost, empowering brands to be more transparent and motivate consumers to choose lower-impact products. In the video, three Swedish companies demo the calculator:

Johan Pihl, Doconomy’s Head of Innovation, says transparency will create a new kind of loyalty and brand preference; and being able to compare products based on their carbon footprint, not only quality and price, will enable a much-needed shift in consumer behavior.

A New Era for Brand Integrity: Navigating the Greenhush-Greenwash Spectrum

Join us as leaders from Republik, NielsenIQ, Conspirators, Henoscene, be/co, The Guardian and Room & Board analyze what newly expanded notions of brand integrity mean for brands, and how to be smarter about picking language choices that avoid the dangerous extremes of greenhushing and greenwashing — Thurs, May 9, at Brand-Led Culture Change.

The beta version of the 2030 Calculator, which is using emissions data from over 300 impact factors, is currently optimized for apparel — but Doconomy says it will soon allow for the calculation of products including food & beverages, furniture and consumer electronics. The free calculator enables self-declared, cradle-to-gate calculations.

”We believe business must play a significant role in helping the planet thrive,” says Kristina Kloberdanz, Chief Sustainability Officer at Mastercard, which in 2019 partnered with Doconomy to release the DO app – a free mobile banking service that lets users track, understand and reduce their CO2 footprints through carbon offsetting. “We’re focused on creating products, services, partnerships — like with Doconomy — and experiences that enable people to reduce their carbon footprint. We believe it is not only about compensating for your carbon impact, but making better choices for the planet.”

Doconomy, also a partner of UNFCCC, is launching the tool as part of their global climate-impact education ambition. The 2030 Calculator is also part of Doconomy’s overarching impact transparency rewards program, Planet Loyalty, which aims to establish carbon labeling as the foundation for conscious consumption. The Calculator has been developed and vetted (ISAE 3000) in collaboration with leading experts within the field of sustainability, data and climate impact such as LCA consultancy 2050 and EY.

The tool doesn’t aim to replace full life-cycle assessments. However, independent third-party testing results show high accuracy, making reliable calculations accessible for all.

Doconomy is inviting businesses and institutions to use the 2030 Calculator to calculate their product footprints, share their data; and collaborate in co-creating the most accurate, free calculator of product carbon footprints.
