- For the first time, data has shown a decoupling between revenue growth and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions output among the world’s 500 largest businesses (Global 500), according to a Thompson Reuters report released today. While as a group the companies are not yet reducing their emissions at a rate that follows the global scientific consensus on the risks of climate change, the slight improvement over the past five years offers a glimmer of hope.

- Yesterday, Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture announced the launch of a new Science Advisory Council focused on informing the membership-based organization’s “science-based approach to delivering sustainable outcomes at the field and landscape levels.” Comprised of 12 experts, the Council is being asked to develop a sustainability standard for commodity crop production in the United States that “helps catalyze continuous improvement in environmental outcomes.”

- BASF Shanghai Coatings Co., Ltd. broke ground today on a new, world-scale automotive coatings plant at the company’s existing site at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing, Shanghai, China. The new plant represents an investment of around €140 million and is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2017.
As the latest investment of the joint venture between BASF and Shanghai Huayi Fine Chemical Co., Ltd, the new plant is an expansion of the automotive coatings plant, which began production in 2014 at the same site.

- The research firm Gartner Inc. has released the findings from its annual Supply Chain Top 25, identifying supply chain leaders and highlighting their best practices. Analysts announced the results May 18 at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
For the first time, Unilever topped the ranking, followed by McDonald's, Amazon, Intel, and a newcomer to the top five, the Swedish fashion retailer H&M. Five new companies made the Supply Chain Top 25 this year, with Schneider Electric, BASF, and BMW joining the list for the first time, and HP and GlaxoSmithKline rejoining after several years. - BASF will continue the Creator SpaceTM program as part of its innovation process to foster co-creation and open innovation within the company. The program was launched during BASF’s 150th anniversary year. In around 50 initiatives around the globe, BASF employees discussed solutions to challenges with a focus on the three anniversary themes of food, smart energy and urban living with more than 6,000 partners from industry, academia, government and society. These initiatives have led to more than 100 projects currently being pursued with partners. In addition, two projects are being carried out within corporate citizenship initiatives.

Any company’s set of relevant stakeholders in business, government and civil society will change with time; a clear picture is essential for effective engagement. Rather than relying on inflexible stakeholder mapping tools, it might be more appropriate to have skilled people and organizational structures in place for ongoing stakeholder analysis and engagement.

- With the opportunity to curb over $80 billion in annual industry losses, a circular economy for plastics seems pretty appealing. Several projects in Europe are working to make this happen: Earlier this month, Sustainable Brands covered a collaborative effort between the cities of London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen to improve plastics capture, but companies, non-profits and research centres are also working together to improve traceability and create new materials to help facilitate the transition to a circular economy for plastics.

- BASF has announced the introduction of a new traceability technology for its crop protection products filling lines: Supply Chain Track and Trace (SCTT). The innovation will enable BASF to show and document the route its products take from the filling stage until they reach farmers. With SCTT, BASF aims to create further transparency in the supply chain and to fight product counterfeiting. The first production lines to implement the new technology are at the BASF’s sites in Tarragona, Spain, and in Genay and Gravelines, both located in France.
