BASF has now improved the process for manufacturing Lupranol® (polyether polyol) so that car components which are made of BASF polyurethane systems emit an average of 20 percent less aldehyde. This allows automotive suppliers, that manufacture e.g. acoustic parts, seats and steering wheels or back-foam instrument panels and doors, to meet the increasing requirements of car manufacturers and the law for lower emissions (VOCs: Volatile Organic Compounds) in vehicle interiors. Following the process change at BASF’s Asian production sites at the beginning of 2017, the modification is now being made in Europe and will take place in the US plants during the course of this year. Alongside isocyanate, polyol is the starting product for polyurethane foam systems.

GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra and nonprofit leaders today introduced new, innovative programs designed to encourage young people to go into technology and engineering professions and improve teacher training in STEM-related subjects.
Noting rapid technological advancements in electrified and self-driving vehicles, cybersecurity and connectivity, Barra said automakers’ futures depend on a deep and diverse pool of talented engineers. Nowhere is this more true than in computer science, where women and minorities make up only a fraction of working professionals. In the U.S., only 18 percent of computer science majors and 10 percent of information security professionals are women.
WALKING THE TALK -
2019 is slated to be a big year for Swedish automaker Volvo, which has announced that in two years’ time, it will no longer produce vehicles that only have internal combustion engines.
Between 2019 and 2021, Volvo will launch five fully electric cars, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, the company’s performance car arm.

Deutsche Post subsidiary StreetScooter GmbH and Ford-Werke GmbH are entering a partnership for the manufacturing of battery-electric delivery vehicles.
After Deutsche Post has already left its mark in the smaller van segment with designing and producing the emission-free StreetScooter, both partners are now working on a larger vehicle type. The chassis of the Ford Transit provides the technical basis. It will be equipped with a battery-electric drive train and fitted with a special body construction according to Post respectively DHL Paket specifications.

Ford continues its push to be a global leader in electric vehicles and sustainability with two new announcements.
Earlier this year, Ford announced a new multi-million-dollar pilot project in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to reduce emissions and improve air quality in London through the use of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) transit custom vans that run solely on electric power. The automaker has now revealed the five fleets that will be participating in the program.

General Motors tested the material diverted from its Rochester Operations facility in New York for building applications.
